Rulings

From the Compendium of Rathe release notes
  • When activating Touch of Reality, part of its activation cost has a resource cost of X, which you must declare any number for X greater than or equal to 0 that you intend to pay as part of paying its resource costs. Effects that increase resource costs are applied before effects that decrease resource costs; however, this effects will not affect the declared value of X for the purposes of Ward X.When Touch of Reality’s activated ability resolves, it will get Ward X. It will also generate a delayed-triggered effect that will destroy Touch of Reality at the beginning of the end phase.
  • You can declare the value of X = 0 when activating Touch of Reality. If you do, Touch of Reality will get Ward 0. If you would be dealt damage and you would apply a Ward 0 prevention effect to that damage event, you would still destroy the object with the Ward 0 ability and the damage value of the event is not reduced.
  • Neither player receives priority during the end phase of a turn.
  • If Touch of Reality was added as a defending equipment card, you can still activate its instant ability and use its ward ability that it gets.

Keyword notes

Ward X - If your hero would be dealt damage, prevent X of that damage and destroy this.
  • Ward is a static ability that generates a fixed-prevention effect.
  • The prevention effect is not optional. It applies whenever damage would be dealt to your hero.
  • If another prevention effect reduces a damage event to 0, the replacement condition is no longer met (damage would not be dealt), so Ward would not apply.
  • The prevention amount applies to a single damage event. The leftover prevention amount does not apply to any future damage that would be dealt to your hero.
  • If the damage prevention can not be applied due to an effect, the object with Ward on it is still destroyed as part of the replacement effect application.
