Mutual Sacrifice must hit a hero, not an ally or other attack-target, in order to trigger.
When Mutual Sacrifice’s trigger resolves, it generates an optional effect: you may choose to either destroy an ally you control, or discard a card with the Ally subtype from your hand. If you choose to generate this effect, the hero that you hit with Mutual Sacrifice will lose 2.
Mutual Sacrifice’s trigger generates a life-loss effect. It cannot be prevented by damage prevention effects (for example, Shadow Resist).
