The attacking hero decides if they want to pay at the time this resolves. (Before damage from the attack action is calculated.)

Trap cards cannot be played from hand.

You can only target attacks with this, you cannot target a defending card that is an attack action.

You can only target the attack on the current chain link. (You cannot target a defending attack action card as it’s not considered an attack).

The ability is not optional, you must target an attack.
