Rulings

From the Usurp the Shadow Throne release notes
  • Sinspeaker Gloomblade has a play-static ability that allows its owner to play it from their banished zone.
  • Sinspeaker Gloomblade has a static ability that checks if it was played from its controller’s banished zone. If it was, it gets an on-attack trigger. When this on-attack trigger resolves, it generates an optional effect: you may choose to search your deck for an aura with Runechant in its name, put it into the arena, then shuffle.
  • When resolving Sinspeaker Gloomblades gained on-attack trigger, If you decline to, or cannot search your deck, you will not shuffle your deck.
  • When resolving Sinspeaker Gloomblades gained on-attack trigger, if you search your deck and fail to find an aura with Runechant in its name, you will still shuffle your deck.
  • Putting a card into the arena is not the same as playing it.

Keyword notes

Usurp - As an additional cost to play this, destroy a Runechant if able. If you do, this gets +2{p}.
  • Usurp is a static ability keyword.
  • Usurp adds an additional cost to cards. You must destroy a card named Runechant, or a card that counts as a Runechant if able. If you destroy a Runechant in this way, the card gets +2power. Any Runechant that is public and in the arena can be destroyed as part of paying this cost, regardless of controller.
  • A Runechant token that is destroyed to pay a usurp cost will not trigger when the card is played: it no longer exists by the time its “when you play an attack action card” trigger would occur.
  • A Runechant that is destroyed to pay a usurp cost is considered to have been usurped when that card is played and put on the stack. This can trigger effects that look for when a card “usurps this”.
  • If there are no Runechants, you can still play the card with the usurp additional cost but you won’t get any additional effects as the usurp cost was not paid.
