Rulings

From the Usurp the Shadow Throne release notes
  • This card’s first ability generates a static-ability that is functional while it is face-up in the arena. This is considered a Runechant object. Rules and effects that specify a “Runechant” may refer to this object. Rules and effects that specify a “Runechant token” cannot refer to this card.
  • Cards that begin with “Runechant of” only count as Runechants while they are in the arena due to their first ability. While they are on the stack they do not count as Runechants for the purposes of cards and effects.
  • This card does not gain the name “Runechant”, or any other properties of a Runechant token (i.e. it doesn’t get its type or triggered ability).
  • When paying the costs that require you to destroy Runechants you control, you may choose to destroy any Runechants you control, not just Runechant tokens. This includes objects which count as a Runechant (e.g. Runechant of…).
  • When an effect is checking how many Runechants you have (e.g. Rune Gate, Grasp of the Arknight, Rune Flash, Reduce to Runechant, etc.), any Runechant tokens and objects that count as Runechants under your control contribute to this check.
  • This card’s first ability triggers when it is destroyed to pay the usurp additional cost for your or your opponent’s attack. You will get the effect when this triggered effect resolves. The controller of this card is instructed to do the effect (e.g. draw a card) regardless of the controller of the usurping attack. Cards that refer to ‘it’ refer to the usurping attack for the purposes of resolving this effect.
  • This card’s second ability triggers when it is destroyed. You will create a Runechant token when this triggered effect resolves.
  • This card’s third ability triggers at the beginning of your action phase. It will also trigger when you play an attack action card. You will destroy this card when this triggered effect resolves.
From the Omens of the Third Age release notes
  • When paying the costs that require you to destroy Runechants you control, you may choose to destroy any Runechants you control, not just Runechant tokens. This includes objects which count as a Runechant (e.g. Runechant of …).
  • This card’s first ability triggers when it is destroyed to pay the Usurp additional cost for your or your opponent’s attack. You will get the effect when this triggered effect resolves.
