Evo Upgrade - The defending hero must defend this with X equipment they control with -1

counters if able, where X is the number of Evos you have equipped.

If the defending hero controls more than X equipment with -1 counters, they choose X of those equipment to defend with. If they control less, they must defend with all of those cards.
If the defending hero controls an equipment with a -1 counter, defending on another chain link, they can not use that to defend with.

Evo Upgrade - (Evo Upgrade – […] for each Evo you have equipped)

Evo Upgrade is an ability label keyword.
Evo Upgrade effects count the number of cards you have equipped that have the subtype Evo.
Effects such as Teklovossen, the Mechropotent, increase the count by 4, even though it is not an Evo that is equipped.
